WHAT IS SEVIS?
SEVIS - Student & Exchange Visitor Information System

SEVIS facilitates timely reporting and monitoring of international students and exchange visitors in the United States. The US government has created this system for electronic tracking of all J-1 participants. SEVIS enables sponsors to transmit participant information to the Department of State (DOS) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS), originally Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS).

The program sponsor (CHI) is required to use SEVIS for issuance of any new DS 2019 forms, which are necessary for applying for a visa. CHI must enter data for each J-1 participant. Once the international students are registered in SEVIS, the program sponsor (CHI) must update their records and report on the events required by the US government.

This new system requires every participant of the Work & Travel Program to provide CHI with the necessary information. This information will be used to update their record in SEVIS and validate their program.

• Within 30 days of the program start date, printed on the DS 2019 form, every participant must contact CHI to confirm that she/he began the W&T Program (arrived to USA)

To confirm arrival every participant should login to www.sevis.org and enter the required information or contact the CHI main office in USA at 1-800-432-4643 (Work & Travel Department) or through chiwt@chinet.org

• Also within 10 days of changing the US home address or employer every participant must provide new information to CHI by logging in to this web site

All exchange program participants must inform program sponsors about their arrival to the US and provide required information. If the participant does not provide this information to CHI in the required timeframes, CHI cannot confirm his/her visa and his/her program will be terminated. Every participant, whose program was terminated, must return to his/her home country immediately. The termination of the program may cause the participant problems in the future with applying for another visa.
